DISTRICT 148 MAKES TOP 10 LIST
3 Students Win Band Director Award Dolton West Elementary District 148 Band Director Jennifer Fitzpatrick describes these three eighth-graders as “good role models and outstanding musicians.” Fitzpatrick has selected Jimmie Jackson of Roosevelt Junior High School and Geoffrey and George Dugger of Washington Junior High School as recipients of this year’s Band Director Award. The award is the highest achievement for a band student, she said. All three students have been in band for four years, are members of the Concert and Symphonic bands, and belong to the Tri-M National Music Honor Society, Fitzpatrick said. Each will have his name added to a plaque that hangs in the district office. The School Board honored the award winners during its May 21st meeting.

Lincoln students get silver, gold at State Science Fair
Two Lincoln Avenue School students headed downstate recently and returned home with gold and silver. Xavier McMillan received a gold award and Kiente Geiger earned a silver award during the May 9 State Science Fair at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. Each received a certificate for their achievement. A total of about 1,000 junior high and high school students participated in the annual event. McMillan’s project, entitled “Boxed Roofs,” won the first place honor in the material science category while Geiger’s “Banana in the Bag” project landed him second place in the area of consumer science. Heading into the competition, McMillan said it was his goal to get the gold award. He said he feels good about his accomplishment “because it’s the highest you could get” as a junior high student. The pair was accompanied by family members and their eighth grade Teachers Amy Giggleman and Erin Moore. Both teachers say they are proud of their students, noting this is the first time Lincoln School had two students in the state competition at the same time. The two Dolton teens are in the Top 10 of their graduating class this year and they qualified for the statewide event by achieving top honors at the Regional Science Fair in Cicero. Both students spent a lot of time making numerous revisions to their projects in anticipation of the state fair. For Geiger, this was his first time qualifying for the state contest.. “I just wanted to know what it felt like to go downstate,” he said, adding he is relieved the competition is over. McMillan is interested in architecture and plans to attend Brother Rice High School in the fall. Geiger is interested in science and physics and will begin the 2009-10 school year at Thornridge High School in Dolton.
