Dear Parents:
As the 2009-2010 school year comes to a close,
I would like to assure you that the teachers and
staff of Roosevelt Elementary will continue educating
your child to the very end. The teachers
and staff need your continued support by making
sure your child comes to school with the
necessary supplies that are needed for learning.
Over the summer break, please make sure your
child reads EVERYDAY.
Below are 8 ways to
raise a better reader:
1. Have your child read to you everyday.
Encourage your child to read at least 20
minutes a day.
2. Be patient-let your child read aloud at his
or her own pace. Offer help only when
needed.
3. Read to your child. Make stories come
alive for your child when you read. Be
animated and use different voices.
4. Read together as a family. Discuss what
you read together. Ask questions, and
listen attentively to your child’s answers.
5. Make reading time special.
6. Take along your child’s favorite books
wherever you go. Read on the bus, in
the car, in line at the store or in waiting
rooms.
7. Take your child to the library often and
check out a variety of age-appropriate
reading material.
8. Be a role-model read on your own. By
seeing how much you enjoy reading,
your child will learn that it’s a great
source of information and fun.
9. Utilize the Study Island internet program
everyday (www.studyisland.com). Your
child can access Study Island by using
his/her school id number.
REMEMBER, by encouraging your child to
read, you are helping to ensure school success.
