The Dolton West Elementary District 148 school community is heavyhearted following the passing of former School Board member Howard Sorrell.
Faculty and staff remembered and honored Sorrell with a moment of silence during the district’s Institute Day on Monday, Aug. 17th.
Sorrell passed away on Aug. 12th following an illness.
Fellow board colleagues, current and past, described Sorrell as a friendly, soft-spoken and very knowledgeable man who cared deeply for the district’s children.
“He was always a very reasonable, dependable board member,” said board member James Bendell who served eight years with Sorrell.
Bendell said Sorrell quietly shared his expertise with the board and would often talk to members “behind the scenes” to avoid any public embarrassment.
Sorrell served three terms on the School Board, from 1995 until 2007.
“We are all saddened by the loss of Howard Sorrell and we are thankful for his service to District 148. He will be missed,” said District 148 Superintendent Jayne Purcell.
Board President Joyce Jackson called Sorrell a diligent and concerned board member who was committed to making sure the district’s teachers always had up-to-date materials and “all the necessary tools” to do their jobs.
“He was someone we could always count on,” said Jackson who served with him for seven years.
“I loved Howard,” Board Vice President Faith Gunter said of her friend.
Gunter said it was Sorrell who asked her to join the board after he became ill.
Former board member Joann Monroe who now is a second grade teacher at Park School in Riverdale spent four years on the board with Sorrell during the early 1990s.
She called him “a nice, sweet guy” who loved the children, was dedicated to the board, and gave her encouragement.
