Washington Junior High School’s chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is doing its part to help others.

NJHS members recently raised money to purchase winter coats for some Washington students in need. Their efforts made it possible to buy and donate a dozen winter coats to fellow students.

In addition, driven by a desire to help victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti, NJHS members and Washington Junior High School staff collected $524 during a Friday, January 22nd fundraiser. The funds are being given to the American Red Cross to provide aid and relief to the people of Haiti, said NJHS sponsor Michelle Nelson.

During the recent fundraiser, students made monetary donations for the chance to wear blue jeans and red or blue shirts (the colors in the Haitian flag) on that Friday, according to Nelson.

NJHS members came up with the idea, made posters and ribbons, and announced their fund-raising campaign over the school intercom. Staff members also contributed to the cause.
