District 148 appoints new board member
Dolton West Elementary District 148’s newest board member brings with him years of experience working with the area’s young people. Larry Lawrence was sworn in and seated to the Board of Education on May 20th. He fills the vacancy left by the April resignation of Willa Williams. A resident of Dolton, Lawrence is employed by Thornton Township as Youth Committee program manager – a title he has held for seven of his nine years with the township. He said he is excited about joining the school board and looks forward to helping to motivate youngsters to stay in school and to realize the importance of a good education. “Being on the board gives me the opportunity to see how (the school system) works from the inside. Having that advantage will allow me to better help the school district and the township to provide resources and program opportunities for students,” he said. The township currently offers after-school academic, fitness, nutrition, technology, and social skills programs to between 150 and 200 youths in Grades 3-12, Mondays through Thursdays during the school year. The township’s Summer Enrichment Program serves youngsters ages 10 to 13. The programs are offered at locations in Calumet City, Harvey, Dolton and Riverdale. |
