Harriet Tubman Elementary School students, staff, parent volunteers, and others came together on Tuesday, April 20th to help beautify the school grounds.

The 2nd Annual Earth Day event had youngsters and adults putting in plants and flowers, hanging birdfeeders, sweeping, and clearing away debris near the entrance to the Dolton school. Some students also enjoyed uncovering and holding the earthworms they found during the process.

Donations of materials from Dolton West Elementary District 148, Thornton Township, Tubman School parents, and staff helped make the day a huge success.

Principal Kathie McHenry said she greatly appreciated everyone ’s contribution in supporting our children’s efforts to beautify our environment, and hopes to continue the yearly celebration.

This year marked the 40th anniversary of Earth Day which began on April 22, 1970. The yearly celebration was founded by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson and is intended to be a time to appreciate and take care of the Earth’s environment.
