Dolton West Elementary District 148 Superintendent Dr. Jayne E. Purcell and the Board of Education are recipients of some special awards from a local community organization.

The Community Partner Awards were presented by the Halfway House Committee, Inc./Sadie Waterford Manor to Dr. Purcell and School Board President Joyce J. Jackson, on the board’s behalf, during Sadie Waterford Manor’s 35th year celebration on Saturday, November 21st.

Dr. Purcell and the School Board were recognized “for their vision and willingness to take the necessary actions to continue to move toward educational excellence.”

“From our very first meeting, it was readily apparent that Dr. Purcell is deeply committed to improving the quality of education for our young people. She has been open to exploring and developing new solutions to address this critical issue,” said Sadie Waterford Manor Executive Director Lester Harris.

He also commended the Board of Education for its support.

"It is through the collaborative efforts of administrators, educators, and community partners that we can begin to improve the quality of education and subsequently the lives of our youth; and strengthen our communities," Harris said.

“Everyone in the community is responsible for the education of our children. It’s not just about me. It’s about everybody who is a part of the educational successes of all children. It is because of those partnerships that children have opportunities,” Dr. Purcell said.

Now in her second year at the district’s helm, Dr. Purcell first came to District 148 in 1980 as a student teacher. Since then she has worked as a special education substitute teacher, as a full-time special education teacher and as the district’s first mentor coordinator.

She also served as Lincoln School’s principal and as support programs director before becoming the district’s chief administrator in the fall of 2008. Dr. Purcell also is a professor at Governors State University.

Jackson, now in her second term as board president, also was credited by the agency for showing “extraordinary leadership.”
