Don’t bully or shun others. Don’t spread or believe gossip. Don’t play with guns.

On Friday, February 5th, Franklin Elementary School students received these and other safety tips from some Dolton police officers.

Officers McMillan and Ganier along with Liaison Youth Officer Thigpen (dressed as the police department’s mascot, Safetypup for Kids), met with fifth and sixth grade students during an afternoon assembly at the Dolton school.

The officers conveyed anti-bullying messages, advised students to go directly home after school, and urged them not to play with any type of guns – actual or toy ones that could be mistaken for the real thing.

“Bullying, gossiping and shunning (others) – these are things that are negative,” Officer McMillan said.

He also reminded youngsters they are at school to learn and they need to stay safe and enjoy their childhood.

“We’re here to give you what we have. What we have is knowledge and experience...,” Officer McMillan said.

The students also were given packets that contained additional safety information and materials about staying drug free.
