Franklin principal assistants get real-life job experience

Four Franklin School students land jobs as principal assistants.

In addition to their regular school work, four Franklin Elementary School students now have jobs helping their school principal with some simple tasks on an as-need basis.

The students -  two boys and two girls - are among those who applied, interviewed for the positions of principal assistants, and landed the jobs. Principal Lisa Davis chose these particular youngsters based on their leadership qualities and their qualifications.

The students said they are pleased with having been chosen for the jobs but were somewhat nervous about the interview process. A couple of them also said it is a little bit intimidating to be role models for younger students.

Some said they applied because they wanted to learn about the employment process. Others said they like helping people, especially teachers, and also want to help Ms. Davis. At least one expressed aspirations about someday becoming a teacher.

All four assistants serve as the principal’s liaisons and run errands throughout the building. The female students also help kindergartners and their teachers get ready for the school day.

Davis plans to treat all students who submitted resumes this year to a pizza lunch.

To be eligible for the positions, students must have a minimum of a “C” average in all subjects and provide a resume including their objective and experience – what they have done in the past to demonstrate the ability to follow directions. They also must possess leadership qualities, self-discipline and provide two character references and a letter of recommendation from their homeroom teacher and reading teacher.

Any principal assistant whose grades fall below a “C” average face possible suspension from their job and may be fired if his or her grades do not improve.

Davis introduced the student assistants concept when she became Franklin’s principal four years ago. The positions are intended to give the children a glimpse into real-life job experience.
