Emergency Procedures:
It is imperative that each school maintains an accurate phone number list to contact each and every parent/guardian in case of an emergency during the after-school hours. In the event of an emergency, the Program Director/Designee will be contacted and will document all details. Typically, if an emergency does arise, the 21st Century Program Director will contact the Superintendent and participating principals to determine the next course of action. One of the goals of the program is to keep children safe; in some cases, keeping the program operating is in the best interest of the children and community to maintain safety. School principals and/or site coordinators should not cancel or impede the after-school program in any fashion without consulting the 21st Century Director/Designee. Maintaining a collaborative working environment is essential for the success of this grant program. Ensuring that everyone has a voice and is afforded accurate and timely information is essential.
All classrooms that contain an after-school classroom should have a visible fire exit plan. This plan must be reviewed before the beginning of each session. In case of an eminent emergency that warrants removing students from the school, the site coordinator, staff and students must exit to the “off site” safety site verified in their “official emergency plan” which is submitted before the after-school start date, August 31, 2009. All classrooms should have current guardian contact lists and current student attendance on a clipboard conveniently stored near the exit door. In winter months, students should store their outer garments in classrooms where they are receiving services in case of a quick exit into frigid weather.
