appleWhat Exactly Goes On After School?

Students come to the after-school program directly after the regular school day dismisses.  Students should not go outside the school building for re-entry unless they have been given permission to do so.  Each school makes sure that students know the process of where to go after school.  It is critical to establish an effective transition process that ensures the supervision of students and addresses their safety at all times.  Some schools transition their students to after-school time by having students go directly to the gymnasium of the school where supervision is in place to monitor the children.  Other programs have  students go directly to their after-school supervised classroom where supervision is also in place.  Each school has the autonomy to decide what transition process will work best for their situation as long as adequate supervision is in place at all times.

Once students have transitioned from the regular school day and are in their after-school classroom, students have a brief snack break and time to use the restroom. The time allotted for this break is typically about thirty minutes.  The snack break time is a nice opportunity for teachers to interact with students and build caring relationships while maintaining structure and order in the classroom.  Snacks are provided to each student participating in the after-school program.  The process for how the snacks arrive at the classroom is determined by the individual school.

It is extremely important that attendance is taken immediately after the 21st CCLC program begins.  On the attendance sheet, the teacher marks an “X” next to the name of the student if they are present and another “X” if they received a snack.  This documentation is not only important for attendance requirements for the grant but also to provide proof that students received a snack.  This is necessary in order to receive reimbursement from the federal government for snacks for after-school program students.

After attendance is taken and snacks are distributed, the attendance sheet is returned to the school office.  The after-school secretary reviews  the attendance sheet and determines if any students present during the regular school day are absent from the after-school program.  All students who are absent from the after-school program must be verified on the absent sheet to determine if a guardian needs to be contacted.  All calls are documented in a phone log stating the reason for the student's absence.

Parents are discouraged from “pulling” their children out of the program for early dismissals unless it is an emergency.  Only authorized adults may sign a student out for early dismissal.

After the snack break is over and attendance is taken, students begin the academic portion of the program.  Approximately half of the students in each classroom begin by participating in the homework / tutoring time that has been aligned with the regular school day.  The other half of the students work on A+nyWhere Learning System curriculum software. Depending on the school's program set-up, students go to the computer lab or use laptop computers or desk top computers within the classroom.  The individual school determines how the equipment will be distributed and utilized by each classroom.  After 45 minutes, the students switch academic roles.  At the conclusion of the academic portion of the program, each student has had 45 minutes to complete homework/assignments for the regular school day as well as 45 minutes on the A+nyWhere Learning System curriculum software.  Teachers and site coordinators make sure that this timeframe is maintained.  If for any reason this is not being maintained, the teacher will notify the site coordinator/Director.  Providing a rigorous and efficient academic program is essential in meeting the academic needs of our students and preparing them for their future.

After the academic portion of the program is completed, the last hour involves activities that are fun and engaging.  This activity hour is offered to students to provide meaningful experiences that will benefit students socially and academically.
